Grace in weakness

But his answer was: “My grace is all you need, for my power is greatest when you are weak.”… (2 Corinthians 12:9 GNT)

Its all grace

January 19

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Genesis 6:8

That Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord does not mean that God showed grace to Noah exclusively. Yes, a flood eventually wiped out everyone else, but not before God gave them one hundred years to repent of their wickedness and receive salvation. Yes, the planet was deluged, but every man had opportunity to hear His message as they observed Noah building the huge barge. But the world refused to grab hold of the good news of salvation, and they drowned in their sin. It wasn’t that God looked at Noah with grace and everyone else with condemnation. God looked at everyone with eyes of grace and mercy. It’s just that Noah found the grace.

The question I want to ask you today is this: What have you found in the eyes of the Lord?

The story is told of the time a London traffic jam prevented C. S. Lewis from arriving at a certain religious symposium on time. The panel, comprised of the world’s most highly esteemed religious thinkers, began without him, their first question being: What is unique about Christianity? Although the Buddhist, Muslim, Jew, and Taoist discussed the question, they could arrive at no conclusive answer. In the midst of their debate, C. S. Lewis burst into the room.

“Dr. Lewis,” said the moderator, “tell us what is unique to Christianity.”

“That’s easy,” Lewis is said to have replied. “It’s grace.”

C. S. Lewis was right. No other religion or philosophy provides unmerited, undeserved, unearned favor. Every other religion, every other philosophy says there are things we must do – devotional exercises, good deeds, or righteous acts – to earn blessings from Allah or to gain favor from Buddha. Only biblical Christianity says, “It’s all grace, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.”

Not in His memory

December 29

And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
Revelation 22:8-9

The interesting thing to me about this is that the same thing happened just a couple pages earlier in Chapter 19, where, after he fell down and worshipped an angel, the angel said to John, ‘See thou do it not.’

So how could John worship an angel again? The same way we make the same mistakes, commit the same sins over and over and over again.

But the good news is that the Lord taught us to forgive so many times that we lose count (Matthew 18:22). And if He taught us to forgive to that degree, how much more will He!

‘Oh, Lord, I blew it again,’ I cry.

‘Again?’ He says, ‘What are you talking about? I don’t remember you blowing it before,’ (Hebrews 8:12).

If Greg suddenly charged up these steps and punched me in the nose, that I could forgive him is within the realm of possibility. But I would never, ever forget it. I don’t have that capability. Only God can say, ‘I’ll not only forgive you, but I won’t remember your sin.’

You see, so precious, so powerful is the blood of Jesus to the Father, that it obliterates every trace and memory of sin. I love that! It’s what gives me such boldness to come before the throne of grace, that I may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

Old faithful

October 16

If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
2 Timothy 2:13

You travel with me halfway across the country to Yellowstone National Park. There we are, standing by the fence waiting for Old Faithful to erupt — as it does every ninety-two minutes. But after about thirty minutes, you become bored and you see a goose which you follow into the woods. I remain by the fence and see the spectacle of Old Faithful’s geyser. You, on the other hand, miss out because you’re on a wild goose chase. Finally you say, ‘This is dumb. I’m going back to position myself close to Old Faithful again.’

Now, when Old Faithful sees you coming, it doesn’t say, ‘Well, well, well. Look who’s finally decided to show up. There’s no way I will erupt for you. You’ve been on a wild goose chase.’ No, Old Faithful erupts regularly, faithfully, no matter where you are or aren’t.

Paul is saying that God is, in the best sense of the word, Old Faithful, because His blessings are continually flowing. If I go off on a wild goose chase, I won’t be blessed — not because the blessings aren’t there, but because I’ve moved away. But once I realize I’m in the woods on some crazy excursion and return to the geyser of the goodness of God’s grace, I find that God is faithful still.

For years, I thought God had to be primed — through praise, prayer, devotion. And I thought if I could just pump the handle of His blessings hard enough, blessing would start coming my way. But then I realized His grace is there anytime I choose to come back to my senses and come back to Him.

God cannot deny Himself, gang. He’s not faithful one day, and frustrated the next. He’s not generous one day, but stingy the next. He is continually and completely faithful.

So good to us

Romans 5:6-8 Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

Be thou exalted!!!

“Be thou exalted” is the language of victorious spiritual experience. It is a little key to unlock the door to great treasures of grace. It is central in the life of God in the soul. Let the seeking man reach a place where life and lips join to say continually “Be thou exalted,” and a thousand minor problems will be solved at once.”

Called to be where you are

July 31

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God …
Ephesians 1:1

‘Make your calling and election sure,’ Peter declared (2 Peter 1:10). Paul was one who knew his calling. He was called by the will of God to be an apostle, prepared for it from the earliest days of his life. Growing up the son of a rabbi, seated at the feet of Gamaliel — the foremost rabbinical scholar of the day — Paul eventually became a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish Supreme Court. And all of his studying, all of his efforts to be righteous in his own energy, all of his attempts to keep the Law blamelessly would be preparatory to make him the minister of the Gospel of Grace.

Not only did Paul know his calling — he also knew his Bible. And with this knowledge came the absolute frustration of trying to live under legalism and religiosity. Consequently, all of his life experiences were preparing him to be an apostle of Jesus Christ. The same is true for you.

You see, God wants to place each one of us in the spot for which He has prepared us from the beginning. God’s will is not something which is heavy or difficult. No, God’s will fits perfectly with the make-up of your personality and with what He’s taken you through in life experientially.

God sees where He wants you to serve Him — whether that be on a construction site, a classroom, or a courtroom; as a butcher, baker, or banker. We often make a mistake in thinking that what we’re doing is second best, that if we were really serious about our faith, we’d be in ‘full-time ministry’. Wrong. The Lord stations His men and women ingeniously where He sees they can minister most effectively so that the people around them will be impacted eternally.

What has God prepared and trained you to do? Be content to do what God has called you to do — to serve where He has placed you — for yours is just as holy and high a calling as that of any preacher or apostle.

The kindness of the savior

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior was revealed, he saved us. It was not because of any good deeds that we ourselves had done, but because of his own mercy that he saved us, through the Holy Spirit, who gives us new birth and new life by washing us. God poured out the Holy Spirit abundantly on us through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that by his grace we might be put right with God and come into possession of the eternal life we hope for. (Titus 3:4-7 GNTD)
